History and culture
Roman Turicum preceded the medieval city. Fraumünster’s convent and urban guilds shaped its development; the sixteenth-century Reformation transformed religious life.
Historic guild houses meet contemporary art. Museums explore Swiss history, while the waterfront and Lindenhof remain everyday places to relax.
Keep quiet in churches and let passengers alight first. Keep residential entrances and narrow passages clear when photographing. Check museum and natural-area rules on site.
Places
Grossmünster

Twin-towered church above the Limmat’s eastern bank.
The former monastery church became a centre of Zurich’s Reformation. Its Romanesque crypt sits alongside stained glass from later periods.
It connects religious history with the city’s familiar skyline.
Restoration is planned for 2025–2029. Check current access; the walk includes exterior viewing. The ticketed Karlsturm climb of 187 steps needs additional time.
Fraumünster

Former convent church on Münsterhof square.
Louis the German founded the convent in 853. Its influential abbess held minting rights; after the Reformation the complex passed to the city.
Its history of female authority is complemented by Chagall and Giacometti windows.
Interior visits are ticketed and subject to services. Walk time excludes a separate stained-glass visit; respect photography rules.
Lindenhof

A green historic hilltop square above the river.
The hill held a Roman fort and later a royal residence. In 1798 an oath to the Helvetic constitution was sworn here.
It reveals the city’s early core and both banks of the Limmat.
Access uses sloping lanes; wet stone can be slippery. Avoid interrupting chess games or other visitors by the viewing wall.
National Museum Zurich

Swiss cultural-history museum beside the main station.
Gustav Gull’s historicist building resembles a castle. A modern extension continues the complex, with exhibitions spanning different eras of Swiss history.
It contextualises urban architecture, crafts and social change.
The walk includes the approach and building exterior. Allow separate time for collections and check admission and opening days.
Kunsthaus Zürich

An art museum in two buildings on Heimplatz.
The historic Moser building connects to David Chipperfield’s extension, opened in 2021. The collection combines Swiss and international art.
It offers a comparison of museum architecture across eras and artistic traditions.
Check whether temporary exhibitions are included in your ticket. The street stop is not a gallery visit; gallery time is excluded from the walk.
Bürkliplatz and Lakefront

An open lakeside square with piers and an Alpine panorama.
After the fortifications were removed, the lakeshore was reshaped in the nineteenth century. Engineer Arnold Bürkli directed the quays’ construction in 1882–1887.
Here the Old Town opens onto a shared lakeside space.
Markets do not run daily. Cruises are separate scheduled journeys, not part of the walk; keep boarding areas clear.
