History and culture
The Oder city developed within changing Central European political and cultural settings. Postwar rebuilding restored damaged streets; modern Wrocław retains traces of these changes alongside new urban traditions.
University interiors and religious Ostrów Tumski contrast with the twentieth-century exhibition complex. Small bronze dwarfs are a modern city motif, not medieval monuments.
Keep quiet in working churches; avoid staged entertainment photographs at places of remembrance. Cross tram tracks carefully.
Places
Old Town Hall

A Gothic town hall at the centre of the Market Square.
Centuries of civic construction produced layered halls and façades; it now houses a museum of bourgeois art.
Read its architecture as an expression of civic power and wealth.
Exterior viewing is free; museum rooms have separate hours and admission.
University main building

A university complex with the Baroque Aula Leopoldina.
Ceremonial university interiors connect the city’s academic history with a Baroque artistic programme.
Compare the riverside façade with painted and decorated interiors.
This is a working university: avoid teaching areas. Check museum, hall and tower access separately.
Cathedral of St John the Baptist

A twin-towered cathedral in Ostrów Tumski.
The religious district preserves the early urban centre’s history; the cathedral complex experienced destruction and restoration.
Explore the quiet surrounding streets and contrast them with the market square.
Respect worship; tower climbs and church visits have different rules, so check current access.
Centennial Hall

Max Berg’s early reinforced-concrete exhibition hall.
Built in 1911–1913, the hall was a major experiment in large public space beneath a reinforced-concrete dome.
This UNESCO site illustrates the transition from historic façades to engineering-led modernism.
Events alter interior access; check the calendar. Exterior viewing does not guarantee entry.
Japanese Garden

A pond and wooden-bridge garden beside the exhibition complex.
Its origins lie in the 1913 exhibition; later Japanese-assisted restoration and flood recovery shaped the present garden.
Notice the sequence of views and bridges, not only individual plants.
The published 2026 season runs April–October; admission is paid. In winter use the surrounding Szczytnicki paths, not the closed garden gates.
Racławice Panorama

A circular painting of the 1794 battle in a dedicated rotunda.
The panorama was created for a Lviv exhibition in 1894 and later installed in Wrocław.
Painting, lighting and a three-dimensional foreground create a historical illusion of presence.
Choose a timed session ahead and check narration language; walking time includes only the rotunda approach.

Ingredients and sourness vary; the name does not imply a single protected recipe.
