History and culture
Ancient Odessos left substantial baths in present-day Varna’s seaside quarter. Museums reveal the region’s earlier heritage and later everyday life. The nineteenth-century cathedral and development of the Sea Garden show the port becoming a modern city.
Maritime life, archaeology and traditions of surrounding communities meet here. Varna is not Golden Sands: the resorts and Aladzha Monastery are beyond the short central routes.
Follow clothing, quiet and photography rules in active places of worship; do not disrupt services. Check museum photography conditions separately. Historic homes and courtyards are not public merely because they appear on a walking route.
Places
Large Roman Baths

Substantial remains of ancient Odessos’s public baths.
The complex belongs to the Roman city of the second–third centuries. Excavations revealed rooms and tall masonry; these are the Large Baths, not the separate Small Baths farther south.
It helps reveal the ancient port’s everyday public spaces.
Check museum access and admission; an exterior view is not a full tour. Do not climb walls or bypass barriers, especially after rain.
Archaeological Museum

Museum of regional antiquities in the former girls’ high school on Maria Luiza Boulevard.
Petko Momchilov’s school building was erected in 1892–1898. After several changes of premises, the museum has occupied the whole former school since 1993.
It connects civic architecture with the Varna region’s archaeological heritage.
The walk includes only an exterior stop. Allow a separate visit for collections, including ancient gold, and check current tickets, seasonal closing days and photography permission.
Dormition Cathedral

Orthodox cathedral on Saints Cyril and Methodius Square.
The cathedral dates to the late nineteenth century, with its first service in 1886. It became a central civic landmark, distinct from the smaller Dormition church on Han Krum Street.
It reveals Varna’s church architecture after Bulgaria’s liberation.
Busy streets surround the square: use signal-controlled crossings. Respect services and check indoor photography rules separately.
Sea Garden

Seaside park with avenues between the centre and the sea.
The coastal area was used for walks from the 1860s. Anton Novak’s plan developed the park in the early twentieth century; cultural and recreational institutions were later added along its avenues.
It provides a green seaside contrast to museum and shopping streets.
The route point is the southern entrance and nearby avenues, not the entire long park. Add beach descents, museums and attractions separately; wind may be stronger than in the centre.
St Nicholas Church

Active church on pedestrian Knyaz Boris I Boulevard.
Construction began in 1859 and lasted eleven years, supported by a bequest from Varna-born Paraskeva Nicolau. Its dedication relates to the patron saint of sailors.
It complements the port’s history with a living religious tradition.
Do not confuse the church with St Nicholas Lighthouse on the breakwater. Respect quiet and entry rules; the route does not assume an interior visit during worship.
Ethnographic Museum

Revival-period house containing a regional ethnographic display.
Built around 1860, the house displays everyday life and occupations in the Varna region during the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including fishing and crafts.
It connects the maritime city with its region’s everyday culture.
October visiting arrangements differ from summer: check closing days with the museum. The walk has only an exterior stop; displays require separate time and compliance with photography rules.

Food
Black Sea mussels
Mussels prepared with wine, garlic and butter on coastal menus.
Check origin, seasonal availability and mollusc allergy; butter adds a milk allergen.
Fish of the day
Fish offering that changes with the available supply.
Ask about species, origin, weight and final price before ordering; not all sea fish comes from the Black Sea.
Tarama
Whipped fish-roe spread served with bread.
Contains fish; bread and the spread’s recipe may add wheat and other allergens.
Shopska salad
Bulgarian vegetable salad with white cheese, a companion to coastal dishes.
Ask for cheese separately if needed; check dressing and additions with the kitchen.
Banitsa
Bulgarian cheese pastry, a convenient snack before a walk.
Check the filling: variants differ. Ask about ingredients if allergic to milk, egg or wheat.
Practical information
Buses and trolleybuses connect the centre with other districts. A ticket from a stop machine runs from issue and needs validation at the first boarding and transfers; an onboard-machine ticket needs it at transfers. Machines use euros: carry exact coins, without expecting change. App and paper day tickets have different validity periods.
Call 112 for urgent help. Account for wind and wet steps by the sea; stay off piers during storms. For swimming follow flags and lifeguards’ instructions—a city beach does not guarantee safe sea conditions. Use street crossings and secure belongings in crowds.
Euro and payments
Bulgaria’s currency is the euro, EUR, from 1 January 2026. Do not plan lev payments from an old guidebook. Check card acceptance and keep a little euro cash for small purchases; review the amount, currency and charges before confirming payment.
Tipping and the bill
Restaurant tips are customary for good service. First check the total and any service charge; choose your own additional tip. When paying by card, ask whether a tip can be added through the terminal.

Emergency help
112 is the free round-the-clock number for urgent police, fire and medical assistance. Give your precise location, explain the emergency and follow instructions. It is not an information line. An offline pack cannot provide a telephone connection. Source: mvr.bg/112.
Electricity
Supply: 230 V / 50 Hz; plug types C and F. Check your device’s voltage rating and suitable adapter. An adapter changes the plug shape, not the voltage; earthed appliances need a suitable earthed adapter.
Connectivity and offline use
Check Bulgaria in your SIM/eSIM plan before travelling. EU roaming applies to eligible plans and has fair-use limits: not every foreign SIM is free to use. Save the city pack, accommodation address and tickets beforehand; coverage and mobile apps require checking on arrival.
