Vaduz

History and culture

The County of Vaduz emerged in 1342 and was acquired by the princely house in 1712. Vaduz and Schellenberg were united as the Principality of Liechtenstein in 1719. Today the administrative centre combines historic buildings with contemporary architecture. The present Parliament Building opened in February 2008 and the art museum in November 2000. Medieval and later alterations shaped the castle; its entire appearance cannot be assigned to one date.

The NationalMuseum explores the country’s culture and natural history, while the Kunstmuseum focuses on modern art. The Red House and nearby vineyards recall rural Vaduz. Try cheese Käsknöpfle and corn-based Ribel; the food belongs to shared Alpine and Rhine-valley traditions rather than necessarily being invented only here. Parliament and the princely residence are working institutions, not a tourist theme park.

Give prayer priority in the cathedral and check photography rules. View the Red House and castle from public routes without entering private grounds. Follow parliamentary security instructions and arrange an interior visit separately. Rules for street photography do not authorise photographing every museum exhibit. Give way on narrow paths and do not enter vineyard rows without permission.

Places

Vaduz Castle — Exterior

Vaduz Castle — Exterior

The princely residence above town; the pin is on the public pavement east of the walls, not inside its courtyard.

The medieval core changed after the 1499 fire and later rebuilding. The princely house has owned the castle since 1712.

View the defensive volumes from the public approach and compare them with administrative architecture below.

The interior is not open to the public; a museum ticket or virtual film does not open its gates. Avoid private entrances. Plan the ascent, return and weather separately.

Red House

Red House

A stepped-gable house, tower and vineyards; the pin is on the public approach, not in the house.

The property has a layered building history; the distinctive ensemble includes early-twentieth-century changes. Its red colouring is traced to the nineteenth century.

Observe the house silhouette and the vineyards’ relationship to the old settlement without making a private plot into a thoroughfare.

The house is private and closed to visitors. View it from an open public route and stay out of the vineyards. Allow time, footwear and daylight for continuing to the castle.

St. Florin Cathedral

St. Florin Cathedral

A neo-Gothic church by the government quarter; the pin marks its outdoor façade approach.

The nineteenth-century church was designed by Friedrich von Schmidt. Modern sculptures by the staircase belong to a different period from the main building.

Compare the slender stone structure with later buildings in the quarter; it is first a working place of worship.

Do not interrupt services; check interior access and photography separately. There are outdoor steps. The walk uses the southern approach and stairs rather than promising step-free entry.

Parliament Building and Square

Parliament Building and Square

The Landtag’s brick volumes beside the historic Government Building on Peter-Kaiser-Platz.

Hansjörg Göritz’s building opened in February 2008. The parliamentary complex continues the administrative centre’s evolution rather than replacing all its historic buildings.

Observe how the contemporary silhouette and square relate to the government quarter and hillside.

Our route is an exterior visit to the square. Arrange parliamentary access separately and respect restrictions and events. Do not use the underground garage entrance as a pedestrian shortcut.

Liechtenstein NationalMuseum

Liechtenstein NationalMuseum

The country’s history, culture and natural-history museum in Städtle; the pin is on the public area by the complex.

The expanded three-part complex opened in November 2003. The collection’s history and the ages of its buildings are separate chronologies.

Add an interior visit to the capital’s exteriors to understand the country beyond its princely castle.

The schedule checked on 4 October 2026 lists Tuesday–Sunday opening, a later Wednesday and Monday closure with specific holiday exceptions. Interior admission, ticketing and at least an additional hour are not included in the exterior walk. Check current hours.

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein

The dark museum cube in central Vaduz; an exterior approach, not a pin inside an exhibition room.

Opened on 11 November 2000, the museum was designed by Meinrad Morger, Heinrich Degelo and Christian Kerez. The linked neighbouring Hilti Art Foundation building followed in 2015.

Observe the polished dark surface and its relationship with the street, then decide how much time to allow for the collections.

The walk ends outside. Check exhibitions, hours, tickets and artwork-photography rules with the museum. A street photograph’s licence does not authorise every interior photograph.

Walking routes

From Cathedral to Parliament

Start at the cathedral’s exterior façade. The open southern passage reaches the stairs to Sankt Florinsgasse, then continue towards the public crossing and Peter-Kaiser-Platz. The checked OSM chain is about 315 m, with 22 steps without a ramp and a street without a mapped pavement: watch traffic and do not continue if conditions are unsafe. Our allowance is 450 m and 70 minutes with two exterior stops; worship, a tour and the return journey are separate. Not a step-free route.

  1. St. Florin Cathedral · 20 min at stop
  2. Parliament Building and Square · 20 min at stop

Two Museums, Two Architectures

From the NationalMuseum’s exterior area, use the open public exit, pavements and marked crossings towards the Kunstmuseum. The checked OSM chain is about 319 m; do not shortcut along the carriageway. Allow 450 m and 65 minutes including exterior stops. This does not include admission to two museums: budget extra time for galleries and ticket desks. The return journey is separate; the whole walk is not certified step-free.

From Red House to Castle

View the Red House from the public approach by Zum Sankt Johanner. Do not enter its private grounds or vineyards. Continue along the open route and Schlossweg, then the exterior pavement to the castle’s east side. The checked OSM chain is about 841 m; Schlossweg has unlit sections, gravel, timber and steps without a ramp. Allow 1100 m and 100 minutes with two exterior stops. Use daylight and turn back for ice or closures. Neither building’s interior is open to visitors; the return journey is additional. Not a step-free walk.

Food

Käsknöpfle

Small dough dumplings with melted cheese and fried onions; local versions may include sour cheese. Often served with apple sauce.

Ask about dairy, wheat flour and egg, the cheese blend and side dish. The name guarantees neither a vegan nor gluten-free version.

Ribel

A corn-based dish fried into crumbly pieces, also called Rebl. It can be served with fruit purée, compote or cheese.

Check ingredients: milk, butter and corn mixed with wheat semolina are possible. Do not infer gluten-free preparation from the word corn alone.

Gerstensuppe

Barley-and-vegetable soup; regional versions may contain cream and smoked meat. Not necessarily vegetarian.

Barley contains gluten. Ask about stock, dairy and meat; an apparently vegetable soup may use meat-based stock.

Ribelmais Soup

A modern interpretation of the corn tradition as a creamy soup; the published local recipe includes cream, white wine and verjus.

This is not the same preparation as crumbly Ribel. Check alcohol, stock, cream and garnishes; the name does not guarantee allergen-free food.

Zwätschgaknedl

Sweet potato dumplings filled with plums and coated in toasted breadcrumbs. A fruit centre contrasts with the soft dough.

Ask about wheat flour, egg, butter and breadcrumbs; the filling may be hot. Check availability and the seasonal version with the venue.

Practical information

Explore Städtle on foot, but the castle is uphill. LIEmobil connects Vaduz with neighbouring towns and rail hubs. Tickets are zone-based: check your route, validity period and cross-border coverage before boarding. The operator sells singles and day tickets from drivers and through supported apps, and advertises contactless payment with common cards on buses. Your device and bank still affect payment. EasyRide requires starting and ending the trip in the app. Possessing a SwissPass does not itself mean you have a valid travelcard. Check the return service beforehand.

Watch belongings: low crime does not exclude petty theft. Schlossweg is an uphill route with unlit sections, gravel, timber surfaces and steps; use daylight and suitable footwear, and turn back for ice or closures. Do not substitute a carriageway or private driveway for a path. Longer mountain hikes require separate preparation, forecasts and warning checks. Our walks are not certified step-free. A saved pack guarantees neither connectivity, passability nor current admission conditions.

Swiss Franc

The currency is the Swiss franc, CHF. Euro acceptance and exchange rates are not universal. Check the currency of prices, change and card transactions; CHF and EUR are not interchangeable units. Ask about card acceptance and ATM fees before proceeding. Museum admission does not implicitly include transport or access to a private residence.

Bills and Tips

Check the menu, service charges and final bill. Tip at your discretion; we do not state a compulsory universal percentage. Ask whether tips can be added by card. For euro payment, agree the exchange rate and change currency first. A regional recipe does not promise availability in every restaurant or a fixed portion.

LIEmobil and Uphill Walks

Explore Städtle on foot, but the castle is uphill. LIEmobil connects Vaduz with neighbouring towns and rail hubs. Tickets are zone-based: check your route, validity period and cross-border coverage before boarding. The operator sells singles and day tickets from drivers and through supported apps, and advertises contactless payment with common cards on buses. Your device and bank still affect payment. EasyRide requires starting and ending the trip in the app. Possessing a SwissPass does not itself mean you have a valid travelcard. Check the return service beforehand.

Emergency Numbers

112 is the international emergency number; 117 police, 118 fire and 144 medical rescue. Dial these short numbers without +423. Give your location, address or coordinates, the person’s condition and number of people involved. The government’s parliamentary answer of 4 September 2026 states that ordinary emergency calls do not automatically transmit location, unlike vehicle eCall. Do not rely on automatic geolocation or treat an offline map as a substitute for connectivity.

Electricity and Type J

The supply is 230 V / 50 Hz, with C and J sockets. Type J differs from a standard continental earthed plug: check the correct adapter and appliance voltage. An adapter does not convert voltage. Avoid loose connections and never bypass protective earthing. A two-pin plug does not make every appliance safe in every socket.

Roaming and Nearby Networks

Liechtenstein is in the EEA, where EU/EEA roam-like-at-home applies to eligible plans subject to its limits. This does not promise free roaming for every foreign SIM. A Swiss network near the border may have different terms: check the selected network, plan and spending cap. Download the pack in advance, save emergency numbers separately and do not assume coverage over the whole hillside.
