Open destination

Sibiu

History and culture

The historic centre developed as a fortified Saxon town. Its squares connected commerce and civic government, while the church on Huet Square was a major community landmark. Stepped passages reveal the town’s different levels.

The German name Hermannstadt recalls Saxon heritage alongside Romanian urban life. Nearby Mărginimea Sibiului adds cheeses and pastoral food to the city experience, but these are regional rather than exclusively urban traditions.

Respect services and clothing and photography rules in active churches. Do not enter closed monastic rooms. Keep doors and passageways clear in squares; an interior visit is separate from an exterior stop.

Places

Large Square

Large Square

Spacious civic square with historic houses and characteristic roof windows.

First mentioned in 1411 as a grain market, the square served commerce and public life, with the town’s representative façades developing around it.

It offers an overall view of the upper town’s scale and famous roof “eyes”.

Look up at the roofs while staying on safe paving. Festivals and markets may change access routes; surrounding museum buildings are separate visits.

Small Square

Small Square

Compact square with the arcades of former trading houses.

The square’s arcades and houses are associated with medieval commerce and crafts. Ocnei Street descends towards the lower town beneath the Bridge of Lies, linking trading spaces on different levels.

It lets you examine arcades and connections within the historic centre.

Respect entrances to working businesses and homes. Do not cross arcade barriers; café tables may narrow the passage.

Council Tower

Council Tower

Tower beside the passage between the Large and Small Squares.

The tower served as a gate in the town’s second defensive circuit. Its name relates to the adjoining civic council; repeated rebuilding changed its height and upper structure.

It shows how a defensive passage became a central civic landmark.

A climb depends on separate access arrangements and stairs. An exterior stop is sufficient for the walk; its timing excludes the tower displays.

Bridge of Lies

Bridge of Lies

Small cast-iron bridge above the descent to the lower town.

Dated 1859, the cast-iron structure links the edges of the Small Square over Ocnei Street. Stories about liars belong to urban legends, not the bridge’s physical properties.

It combines an engineering detail with a clear view of the town’s different levels.

The bridge is narrow: keep a passage clear and do not climb the railing. Treat the legend as folklore rather than a proven historical event.

Evangelical St Mary’s Church

Evangelical St Mary’s Church

Gothic church on Huet Square with a prominent skyline.

Its Gothic form developed from the thirteenth to the early sixteenth century, with construction completed around 1520. After the Reformation it continued to serve the Saxon Lutheran community.

It connects the skyline with a living religious and musical tradition.

Check tourist access, services and concerts separately; the tower climb is not included. Follow indoor photography rules and avoid disturbing worshippers.

Stairs Passage

Stairs Passage

Historic steps and an arched passage between the upper and lower town.

The passage lies beside the old defensive line; the Stairs Tower retains medieval origins. Later changes connected the fortified upper town with streets below.

The slope and arches make the two-level town layout understandable on site.

Expect steps and uneven surfaces: this is not step-free. Descend carefully after rain; the stairs do not grant access to adjoining closed courtyards.

Food

Balmoș

Pastoral cornmeal and dairy dish associated with the Sibiu region.

Check seasonal availability and cheese and cream ingredients; unsuitable for a milk allergy.

Brânză de burduf

Distinctive sheep’s cheese from the pastoral tradition of Mărginimea Sibiului.

Ask about origin and storage; saltiness and maturation vary.

Telemea

Brined cheese, made from different kinds of milk in the region.

Check the milk type and origin; this is a regional product, not exclusively urban.

Pork soup with tarragon

Regional ciorbă in which tarragon complements the meat broth.

Check sour cream and other additions; the soup is not vegetarian.

Regional trout

Trout from nearby valleys forms part of the Sibiu region’s food experience.

Ask about origin and preparation; expect possible bones and fish allergens.

Practical information

Tursib runs urban and metropolitan transport. The 60-minute urban ticket is for travel within Sibiu and permits transfers within its validity; validate a travel card at each boarding. For neighbouring settlements choose the appropriate metropolitan ticket, not an ordinary urban one.

For a life-threatening emergency, fire or urgent police assistance call 112 and give your location. Secure belongings in crowds, use crossings and watch for slippery cobbles. The routes below do not replace checking temporary closures and access on arrival.

Money and payments

Currency: Romanian leu, RON, not euro. Check accepted cards and keep some lei for small purchases. Review the currency and charges at ATMs and terminals, alongside your bank’s terms.

Tipping

Tipping is voluntary: you may choose zero or your preferred amount on the restaurant bill. Check the total and separate tip line on the receipt; suggested percentages do not make a tip compulsory.

Emergency help

112 is the free single number for ambulance, police and fire services. Give your address or map location, explain the emergency and follow the operator’s instructions. An offline map can help identify your location but cannot provide a connection. Source: legislatie.just.ro/Public/DetaliiDocument/168675.

Electricity

Supply: 230 V / 50 Hz; plug types C and F are used. Check your plug and device voltage rating. Use a suitably earthed adapter where required; a plug adapter does not convert voltage.

Connectivity and offline use

Check Romania in your SIM/eSIM plan before travelling. EU roaming rules apply to eligible plans from operators in that area and can have limits; do not assume every foreign SIM is free to use. Save the city pack, accommodation address and tickets in advance.
