History and culture
The historic core was an island later joined to the mainland. Venetian heritage appears in gates and stone streets, fishing heritage in traditional boats. Croatian and Italian cultural layers coexist.
Rovinj is more than a photogenic skyline: craftspeople, fishers and the community preserve batana skills and songs. Distinguish living tradition from seasonal visitor events.
Respect silence and dress rules in churches. Keep residential doors and stairs clear when photographing. Remember that people live in old quarters, especially at night.
Places
Church of St Euphemia

A Baroque church and bell tower above the Old Town peninsula.
The present church grew from earlier churches and eighteenth-century rebuilding. Patron saint Euphemia is central to local religious tradition.
The town hill reveals the relationship between old streets, harbour and archipelago.
Bell-tower climbing requires separate access and steep steps. Treat the floating-sarcophagus story as local legend, not established fact.
Balbi's Arch

A stone arch at the entrance to the old quarters.
The seventeenth-century Baroque arch replaced an earlier town gate; its decoration reflects the Venetian period.
It marks the transition from harbour square to the former island’s narrow streets.
View details on both sides without blocking the passage; watch for smooth wet stone.
Grisia Street

A stepped street of studios on the way to St Euphemia’s Church.
The stone street links old buildings with artistic life; its open-air exhibition tradition developed in the later twentieth century.
It connects town stairways with intimate artistic spaces.
The open-air exhibition is a scheduled event, not a daily guarantee. Choose footwear for steps and slopes.
Batana House Eco-museum

A museum of the wooden flat-bottomed boat and community maritime culture.
The interpretation centre opened in 2004 in a historic house. It connects boatbuilding skills, fishing and local songs.
It presents the batana as part of a living community, not an isolated museum object.
Exhibition and boat activities are arranged separately; the walk includes the approach to the house. Do not assume daily boat outings without checking schedules.
Golden Cape Forest Park

A coastal forest park south of the centre with shaded paths.
Late-nineteenth-century planting transformed the shore into a park of native and introduced trees, later protected.
It complements the stone town with vegetation and a walking shoreline.
The stop represents a park section, not a full circuit. Stay on paths and do not light fires; swimming and climbing are not part of the walk.
Old Harbour

A harbour promenade overlooking the historic peninsula’s houses.
Fishing and small wooden vessels long shaped Rovinj’s life; the harbour still connects town and sea.
Compare working boats with the eco-museum’s account of local maritime skills.
Stay off restricted piers and clear of loading. Boat outings require separate tickets and suitable weather.

112 is the free emergency-services number. Give your location and the incident; English is supported. Source: gov.hr/en/112-uniform-european-emergency-phone-number/1184.
Electricity
Supply: 230 V / 50 Hz, plugs C/F. Earthed appliances need a compatible earthed adapter. A plug adapter does not change voltage.
Connectivity
Check roaming terms and limits with your operator. Save maps and tickets before walking; avoid automatically joining expensive satellite networks on vessels.
