History and culture
The town suffered severe destruction in October 1944. Aalto’s 1945 reconstruction plan is known as the “reindeer antler” plan; the 1965 library became part of its new civic-cultural centre.
Museums introduce northern nature and history, while architecture explains post-war rebuilding. Lapland and Sámi culture are not interchangeable: learn about individual communities rather than reducing the region to Christmas entertainment.
Queue considerately and keep cycle lanes and entrances clear. Be quiet in active churches and library reading rooms; ask before close-up photographs of people. Private courtyards are not through-routes.
Places
Arktikum

Museum and science centre in a building with a glass gallery.
Arktikum opened on 6 December 1992. Danish architects combined its glass corridor with Lapland materials; an extension followed in 1997.
Helps explain northern environments, societies and history.
Exhibitions are ticketed and hours vary by season. The walk covers the exterior and open paths, not the whole museum. Do not leave the shore for the ice.
Korundi House of Culture

Art museum and concert hall in a former postal vehicle depot.
The 1933 depot is one of the few buildings to survive the war. The art museum has occupied it since 1986; after Juhani Pallasmaa’s transformation Korundi opened on 25 May 2011.
Connects city memory with contemporary art and music.
Exhibition and concert tickets differ. View the façade on the walk and schedule a separate art visit; keep out of staff areas.
Aalto Library

City library in the civic-cultural centre.
Alvar Aalto’s library was completed in 1965, the first building in this ensemble. Its 2025 restoration reinstated details of the original design.
Shows civic architecture from the post-war reconstruction period.
Check library hours and guided-tour arrangements. The walk covers exterior viewing; the nearby City Hall has separate access arrangements and renovation restrictions.
Rovaniemi Church

Post-war reconstruction church with a tall tower.
The present church was built in 1950 after the earlier wooden church was destroyed in 1944. It became a prominent part of the rebuilt city.
Reveals the local community’s history of loss and reconstruction.
Services take priority over sightseeing. View the exterior on the route; check visiting hours and holiday changes with the parish.
Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge

Cable-stayed bridge across the Kemijoki with a distinctive illuminated top.
The bridge opened in 1989. The light on its pylon recalls a burning log, the “lumberjack’s candle”, associated with the region’s forestry history.
Connects engineering architecture with river and forestry history.
View it from the open city-side embankment; do not enter the carriageway or river ice for photographs. Crossing the bridge and returning are not required for this stop.
Santa Claus Village

Visitor complex at the Arctic Circle, north of the centre.
The modern complex develops Rovaniemi’s Christmas identity through its post office, workshops and separately operated Santa meeting venues.
Shows the city’s contemporary tourism identity.
A separate outing about 8 km from the centre, not an urban walking route. Grounds entry is free, but purchases, photos and activities are charged separately. Check each operator’s hours; snow attractions are seasonal.

Practical information
Linkkari buses serve the city. The centre and Santa Claus Village are in zone A; bus 8 reaches the village. Singles last 60 minutes; Waltti Mobile tickets must be valid before boarding and their QR is scanned each ride. Contactless cards pay for one passenger, with 60-minute and 24-hour caps; Airport Express is a separate operator.
Call 112 in danger. Do not walk onto river ice: water flows beneath it and it can be extremely weak. In winter use warm layers, grippy footwear, a reflector and spare battery power; do not walk on ski tracks. Do not stand in roads to watch aurora; sightings are not guaranteed.
Money and payments
Currency: euro, EUR. Cards are widely accepted; carry a backup card and a little cash. Cash totals are rounded to the nearest five cents, not each individual item.
Tipping
Tips are optional and not expected. You may leave a small amount for particularly good service; check the bill total before paying.

Emergency help
112: urgent police, fire or ambulance assistance, without an area code. State your location and incident and answer the operator. 116117 advises on acute medical problems; it does not replace 112 in life-threatening danger. Check call access and charges with a foreign phone plan. Sources: 112.fi and 116117.fi.
Electricity
Supply: 230 V / 50 Hz. Check your plug and appliance voltage range; preserve required earthing. A plug adapter alone does not change voltage.
Connectivity
Check your operator’s roaming and data limits. Save accommodation details and routes offline. Mobile tickets require battery power; keep the phone warm in cold weather and carry a power bank.
