History and culture
The Venetians built fortifications with Famagusta Gate in 1567. The Cyprus Museum dates to 1882 and the Leventis Municipal Museum opened in 1989. The redesigned Eleftheria Square was completed in 2021; the city remains divided by the Green Line.
Museums trace island and capital history while Laiki Geitonia preserves traditional street scale. Cypriot dishes here belong to shared national traditions rather than exclusively Nicosian inventions.
Cover shoulders and knees in active churches; respect services and check photography rules. Observe museum flash restrictions; do not touch mosaics or exhibits. Respect old-town residents and do not enter private courtyards.
Places
Cyprus Museum

The country’s principal archaeological museum with finds from successive island periods.
Founded in 1882; the present museum building dates to the early twentieth century. Collections cover early settlement, antiquity and early Christianity.
Provides context for monuments encountered in other Cyprus cities.
Do not confuse it with the natural history museum. Check current hours and admission; the walk uses the entrance area, with extra time needed for a full visit.
Eleftheria Square

Modern public connection between old and new city beside the walls.
Completed in 2021, the Zaha Hadid Architects project linked urban streets with public levels beside the Renaissance fortifications.
Shows a contemporary rethinking of space alongside historic walls.
Use open pedestrian paths; stairs and changing levels need care. Do not assume the entire old town is step-free.
Leventis Municipal Museum

City-history museum in historic Laiki Geitonia houses.
The museum project began in 1984 and opened in April 1989. Displays explore Nicosia’s development and residents’ lives.
Makes urban history accessible through everyday objects.
This is the municipal museum, not the Leventis art gallery. The current schedule closes on Mondays; check holidays and temporary exhibitions.
Shacolas Tower Museum and Observatory

Viewing floor above the Ledra shopping street.
The eleventh-floor museum and observatory was developed with the Leventis Municipal Museum. Historical photographs compare the earlier city with today’s panorama.
Helps explain the walls, neighbourhoods and divided city’s layout.
The ascent is a separate ticketed visit; check lift operation and hours. The walk stops at the base; do not photograph military installations.
Ledra Street — southern section

Pedestrian shopping street in southern old Nicosia.
The name recalls ancient Ledra, a predecessor of the capital. Today the shopping street reaches the city’s division; this entry covers only the section south of the crossing.
Introduces the old centre’s everyday commercial life.
Do not pass the checkpoint as part of this walk. Follow instructions at barriers, do not photograph posts, and return through southern streets.
Laiki Geitonia

Restored neighbourhood of narrow pedestrian lanes inside the walls.
Traditional houses were adapted for crafts, shops and cultural life. The restored neighbourhood was formally inaugurated on 21 December 1983.
Preserves the human scale of the old capital’s lanes.
Stay on public lanes and out of private courtyards. Check workshops and shops separately; festive events are not year-round.
Famagusta Gate

Largest of the three gates in Nicosia’s Venetian walls.
Built in 1567 to Giulio Savorgnano’s design, the gate was originally Porta Giuliana. Its road towards Famagusta gave it today’s name; restored chambers became a cultural venue.
Reveal the entrance design of a Renaissance fortified city.
The route approaches the outer façade. Check the cultural centre’s current schedule for the chambers; do not treat an old post-flood closure report as the current status.

Practical information
Cyprus Public Transport buses serve Nicosia. Buy a paper single from the driver; do not treat it as a transfer ticket. For smart cards the operator permits two different routes within 60 minutes without another charge; validate on every boarding. Motion products cover the district of purchase, not the whole island. Check current CPT diversions and fares. Verify airport shuttles and intercity journeys separately. These walks stay south of the Green Line.
Traffic drives on the left: look both ways and use crossings. Carry water and sun protection; do not bypass barriers at ancient sites. Before travelling check your own government’s current advice, flights and insurance: regional conditions can disrupt connections. Observe fire restrictions. These walks do not cross the Green Line. Do not enter behind barriers or into the controlled buffer zone, and do not photograph military posts. Visiting the other part of the city needs separate checks of documents and current rules; it is not included in this pack.
Money and payments
The Republic of Cyprus uses euro, EUR. Carry a card and a small cash reserve; do not expect bank-card payment on every bus. Check withdrawal fees and offered conversion before confirming. A phone number’s country or displayed currency does not replace checking the bill.
Bill and tipping
Check service and extras in the menu and bill. If you wish to tip, choose the amount yourself; do not automatically add a percentage on top of a service charge. Ask about dishes priced by weight and portion sizes before ordering.

Emergency help
112 or 199 connects emergency police, fire and medical help in the Republic of Cyprus. State your location, address or coordinates and the incident. These are not tourist information lines. Source: Cyprus Police; an offline pack does not provide phone connectivity.
Electricity
230 V, 50 Hz, with British three-pin Type G sockets. Other plugs need a suitable adapter preserving earthing. Check appliance voltage: a plug adapter is not a converter.
Connectivity and offline use
The country calling code is +357. Ask your operator about charges, especially near the Green Line: check the network your phone joins and do not assume every SIM has free roaming. Save maps, tickets and accommodation details and charge your phone in advance. Timetable updates need connectivity.
