History and culture
Moscow grew around the Kremlin into the political center of a large state. Repeated rebuilding left a city where medieval churches, neoclassical districts, constructivism and modern towers coexist.
Theater, museums, parks and long urban walks are central to city life. Distances are large, but neighborhoods become more legible when explored from metro station to metro station.
In churches, dress and behave respectfully. On escalators, stand to the right and keep the left side clear for people walking.
Places
Red Square

Moscow's central ceremonial space between the Kremlin and historic trading arcades.
The square developed beside the Kremlin walls and became the stage for markets, state ceremonies and major public events.
Its scale brings together several defining monuments in one immediately legible urban space.
Visit early in the morning for quieter views and check temporary closures before arrival.
Moscow Kremlin

A fortified historic complex of cathedrals, palaces and state buildings.
The site evolved over centuries as the political and spiritual center of Moscow and the Russian state.
Its cathedrals, walls and museum collections reveal several layers of national history in one place.
Buy timed museum tickets in advance and allow extra time for security checks.
Saint Basil's Cathedral

A landmark sixteenth-century cathedral known for its vivid clustered domes.
The cathedral was commissioned under Ivan IV to commemorate military victories and later became a defining symbol of Moscow.
The compact interior reveals a surprising network of chapels and passages behind the famous silhouette.
The interior is tighter than it appears outside; visit outside peak hours if possible.
State Tretyakov Gallery

The essential collection of Russian art from medieval icons to the early twentieth century.
The gallery grew from Pavel Tretyakov's private collection into the country's central museum of Russian art.
Its chronological rooms make the development of Russian visual culture clear even on a first visit.
Choose a focused route through the collection and allow at least two hours.
Zaryadye Park

A contemporary landscape park beside the Kremlin with river and skyline views.
The park opened on the site of the former Rossiya Hotel and reinterprets several Russian landscapes in the city center.
Its elevated bridge offers one of the most accessible panoramic views near Red Square.
Go near sunset, but expect the floating bridge to be busy at peak times.
Gorky Park

A broad riverside park for walking, cycling, exhibitions and seasonal activities.
Opened in the late 1920s, the park has repeatedly changed with Moscow's ideas of public recreation.
It offers an easy break from the dense center and connects naturally to the river embankment and museums.
Combine it with the nearby Garage Museum area and continue along the embankment.
Walking routes
Tretyakov Gallery and Gorky Park
Start outside the historic Tretyakov Gallery building in Lavrushinsky Lane, then use city pavements and permitted crossings to reach Gorky Park. Around 3.2 km including approaches is a planning estimate; a straight map line is not a pedestrian path. Exhibition entry is paid separately. Zaryadye lies in a different direction and is not included; check temporary embankment closures.

Food
Borscht
Beet soup commonly served with sour cream, herbs and dark bread.
Try a house version as a starter and add sour cream gradually.
Pelmeni
Small meat-filled dumplings served with butter, broth, sour cream or vinegar.
Order them hot and choose one accompaniment rather than mixing every sauce.
Blini
Thin pancakes with savory or sweet fillings, from fish and sour cream to jam.
They work as breakfast or a quick meal; order several small fillings to share.
Syrniki
Pan-fried cottage-cheese cakes served with sour cream, berries or condensed milk.
Best eaten hot at breakfast; start with sour cream before adding sweeter toppings.
Beef stroganoff
A Russian restaurant classic of small pieces of beef in sauce, often with sour cream. It appears on Moscow menus but is not exclusive to Moscow.
Check the sauce and side dish: mushroom, cream and sour-cream versions differ. The name does not guarantee one particular recipe.
Practical information
The metro is the fastest way across the city and many stations are architectural landmarks. Use surface transit and walking for shorter connections.
Use ordinary big-city precautions, keep belongings secure in crowded transport and use official taxi apps rather than street offers.
Currency
Russia uses the ruble. International bank cards may not work, so verify payment access before the trip and carry a practical local alternative.
Tipping
Tips are voluntary and the amount is your choice. Compare the bill with the menu and ask about unfamiliar entries. Do not pay the same voluntarily agreed tip twice.
Metro
The metro is extensive and frequent. Signs and announcements on central routes include Latin transliteration or English; keep a route app available offline.
Emergency number
Call 112 for the unified emergency service.
Electricity
C/F outlets with round contacts are common, with 50 Hz mains. Check your device’s input rating against the local supply before connecting; universal chargers are labelled 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz. A plug adapter does not change voltage, and protective earth must be maintained.
Connectivity and offline access
Save your accommodation address, contacts and maps before heading out. Keep metro directions offline, as internet access en route is not guaranteed. Avoid using unfamiliar public Wi-Fi for sensitive accounts.
