Limassol

Seaside city with a medieval castle, old harbour, modern marina and promenade; Kolossi and Kourion are separate outings west of the centre.

Sources verified: 3 October 2026. Check current access notices before visiting.

Open destination

Limassol

History and culture

The old centre developed beside the harbour and castle, whose current form reflects the Ottoman rebuilding of 1590. Nearby stand the Knights’ castle at Kolossi and ancient Kourion. The modern marina’s commercial area opened to the public in 2014.

Port life meets old-town cafés and shared Cypriot culinary traditions. The municipal gardens host a wine festival; check event dates and conditions for the current year.

Cover shoulders and knees in active churches; respect services and check photography rules. Observe museum flash restrictions; do not touch mosaics or exhibits. Respect old-town residents and do not enter private courtyards.

Places

Limassol Castle

Limassol Castle

Old-centre fort housing the Cyprus Medieval Museum.

The first documented reference dates to 1228. Following damage and earthquakes, the Ottomans rebuilt the present fort in 1590; the story of Richard the Lionheart’s wedding here is a tradition, not proof of these walls’ age.

Connects harbour history with evidence of the Middle Ages.

The walk includes the exterior. The museum and steps need extra time; check hours, admission and holiday closures.

Limassol Old Port

Limassol Old Port

Historic harbour between the old city and modern marina.

The harbour is linked to the old centre’s development around the castle. The regenerated port adjoins the marina, but they are distinct sites and not the city’s main cargo port.

Shows the transition from the earlier port centre to today’s waterfront.

Use public paths and stay off working quays and vessels. Venues, tours and boats have separate conditions.

Limassol Marina

Limassol Marina

Modern yacht harbour with public commercial walkways.

Construction began in 2010 and the first yachts arrived in 2013. The commercial area opened to the public in June 2014 and the final residential phase was handed over in 2021.

Reflects the development of contemporary waterfront Limassol.

Stay on open paths; do not enter residential areas, pontoons or yachts without permission. Do not confuse the marina with the Old Port.

Molos Promenade

Molos Promenade

Seafront park with walking paths and open sea views.

The modern multifunctional park extends the waterfront beside the Old Port. It also contains a sculpture park, with Olympia Coast to the east.

Offers a waterfront walking route without leaving the city.

Stay off wet breakwater edges. Follow pedestrian and bicycle markings; swimming is not included in this walk.

Municipal Gardens

Municipal Gardens

Urban green park near the seafront avenue.

The gardens became a place for recreation and civic events, including the wine festival. The zoo is in the same grounds but has separate admission arrangements.

Offer a green break after the waterfront.

The route uses open garden paths, not zoo or festival admission. Check access during event preparation; do not feed animals.

Municipal Market — Agora

Municipal Market — Agora

Regenerated market building in the Saripolou Square area.

The historic First Municipal Market building was adapted as Limassol Agora. The municipality presented the regeneration in November 2019; do not confuse it with the Second Municipal Market.

Introduces the reuse of old-centre commercial architecture.

The walk stops outside. Check current businesses for vendors, food and hours: a daily farmers’ market is not promised.

Kolossi Castle

Kolossi Castle

Stone Knights’ tower west of Limassol.

The first castle was built in the thirteenth century and the present one in the fifteenth. It housed the Order of St John’s Grand Commandery; medieval sugar-mill remains stand nearby.

Explains the Knights’ history and the area’s association with Commandaria.

A separate outing about 14 km west of the city, not a central walking stop. Check admission and hours; internal stairs are not a step-free route.

Kourion Archaeological Site

Kourion Archaeological Site

Ancient hilltop city with a theatre and mosaics.

Kourion was an important island city-kingdom. The theatre was built in the second century BC and enlarged in the second century AD; the earthquake of 365 severely damaged the city.

Connects ancient urban planning, performance architecture and early Christian remains.

A separate outing west of Limassol, not a walk from the centre. The exposed site has little sun protection; do not step on mosaics. Check current restrictions: the 1–7 December 2025 works notice does not mean closure in October 2026.

Walking routes

Castle, old harbour and marina

From the castle square take public streets down to the Old Port, then open paths to the marina. Stay off closed quays and residential pontoons. Timing includes exterior stops; the museum, boats and return are separate.

Practical information

EMEL runs city buses. Motion e-wallet has an announced 90-minute transfer window from first validation; do not apply this to paper singles or another district. Validate when boarding. EMEL has announced fare changes from 5 November 2026: check the effective fare table before travel. Airport expresses are separate services. Kolossi and Kourion west of the city need transport and are not included in central walks.

Traffic drives on the left: look both ways and use crossings. Carry water and sun protection; do not bypass barriers at ancient sites. Before travelling check your own government’s current advice, flights and insurance: regional conditions can disrupt connections. Observe fire restrictions.

Money and payments

The Republic of Cyprus uses euro, EUR. Carry a card and a small cash reserve; do not expect bank-card payment on every bus. Check withdrawal fees and offered conversion before confirming. A phone number’s country or displayed currency does not replace checking the bill.

Bill and tipping

Check service and extras in the menu and bill. If you wish to tip, choose the amount yourself; do not automatically add a percentage on top of a service charge. Ask about dishes priced by weight and portion sizes before ordering.

Emergency help

112 or 199 connects emergency police, fire and medical help in the Republic of Cyprus. State your location, address or coordinates and the incident. These are not tourist information lines. Source: Cyprus Police; an offline pack does not provide phone connectivity.

Electricity

230 V, 50 Hz, with British three-pin Type G sockets. Other plugs need a suitable adapter preserving earthing. Check appliance voltage: a plug adapter is not a converter.

Connectivity and offline use

The country calling code is +357. Ask your operator about charges, especially near the Green Line: check the network your phone joins and do not assume every SIM has free roaming. Save maps, tickets and accommodation details and charge your phone in advance. Timetable updates need connectivity.
