Kraków

A medieval square, royal Wawel and the Jewish heritage of Kazimierz.

Sources verified: 3 October 2026. Check current access notices before visiting.

Open destination

Kraków

History and culture

The historic centre includes the Old Town, Wawel and Kazimierz. Market streets, a royal residence and Jewish neighbourhoods reveal different roles of the former capital.

University traditions coexist with active places of worship and museums. Kazimierz is both a café district and a place of Jewish history; distinguish entertainment from remembrance.

Keep quiet in working churches; avoid staged entertainment photographs at places of remembrance. Cross tram tracks carefully.

Places

Wawel Royal Castle

Wawel Royal Castle

A royal residence on the hill above the Vistula.

The medieval castle became a Renaissance palace; collections reveal courtly connections and artistic exchange.

The arcaded courtyard contrasts palace architecture with the market square.

Select tickets by exhibition; castle and cathedral are separate institutions. Allow time for the climb and queues.

Cloth Hall

Cloth Hall

Historic trading halls in the centre of the Main Market Square.

The medieval trading building gained a Renaissance appearance; its upper floor later became museum space.

Trade and art occupy different levels of the same building.

Distinguish the trading arcade from the ticketed art museum upstairs; check separate admission.

St Mary's Basilica

St Mary's Basilica

A working basilica with two unequal towers.

The Gothic church’s Veit Stoss altarpiece combines architecture, sculpture and religious narrative.

Compare the towers from the square; inside, focus on the altarpiece and church space.

Sightseeing and prayer areas are separate; respect services and current photography rules.

Old Synagogue

Old Synagogue

A museum of Jewish culture in a historic Kazimierz synagogue.

The fifteenth-century building was remodelled in Renaissance forms. Wartime destruction and postwar restoration changed its role; it now houses a museum.

Explore community rituals and everyday life, not only the exterior architecture.

Check closures, including religious dates; this museum is not an ordinary working synagogue.

Barbican

Barbican

A circular brick fortification before the former city walls.

The fortified approach to the gate reveals late-medieval Kraków’s defensive system.

Look at the firing openings and its position relative to Florian Gate.

Exterior viewing does not require museum admission; check the museum’s timetable for interior access.

Planty by the old walls

Planty by the old walls

The western section of the green ring around the Old Town.

The park replaced former fortifications, turning a defensive boundary into public walking space.

Follow the green ring tracing the former line of fortifications.

Route stops refer to the western section, not the full ring. Watch for bicycles at crossings.

Food

Obwarzanek krakowski

A braided dough ring boiled before baking; a Kraków product with protected geographical indication.

Look for a fresh one at stalls; toppings include salt, poppy seed and sesame.

Kazimierz zapiekanka

A hot baguette half with mushrooms, cheese and toppings, popular as a city snack.

Compare versions around Plac Nowy; check the portion size and sauce ingredients.

Podhale oscypek

A smoked cheese from mountainous Podhale, also sold in Kraków; a regional rather than city-origin product.

Check the label: not every smoked cheese is oscypek. Ask about the milk used.

Pierogi

Polish filled dumplings, with fillings ranging from potato and curd cheese to meat or fruit.

Ask about both filling and garnish: even vegetable fillings may be served with pork crackling.

Żurek

A tangy fermented-rye soup found across Poland, not exclusive to this city.

Often includes sausage and egg; check the ingredients if avoiding meat.
