History and culture
Helsinki became the capital in 1812. Ehrenström and Engel shaped its neoclassical centre; the cathedral was dedicated in 1852. The maritime fortress begun in 1748 recalls the city’s earlier role.
Public libraries, market halls and cafés connect everyday city life. Finnish dishes sit alongside international cooking; Karelian pies and northern reindeer dishes are not Helsinki inventions.
Queue considerately and keep cycle lanes and entrances clear. Be quiet in active churches and library reading rooms; ask before close-up photographs of people. Private courtyards are not through-routes.
Places
Cathedral and Senate Square

White Lutheran cathedral above the neoclassical civic ensemble.
Carl Ludvig Engel’s cathedral was dedicated in 1852. Ernst Lohrmann continued the work after the architect’s death and altered building details.
Explains how the new capital’s centre was formed.
Tourist entry is charged in June–October, and services affect access. Check special-exhibition arrangements separately. The walk covers exterior views; cathedral steps are steep and can become icy.
Oodi Central Library

Public library with a curved timber façade.
ALA Architects’ library opened on 5 December 2018. Its three levels bring together social space, workshops and reading.
Shows a contemporary library as an open civic space.
General library areas are free during opening hours. Studios and rooms have separate booking rules; respect readers and plan an indoor visit separately from the walk.
Temppeliaukio Church

Active church built into Töölö bedrock.
Brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen designed the church dedicated in 1969. Rock walls and its dome became part of the architecture and acoustics.
Reveals Finnish modernism’s relationship with natural terrain.
Adult visitor entry is charged; exact hours are published for the coming week. Exterior viewing is not an interior visit: allow separate time for the hall or a concert.
Old Market Hall

Food-market building beside the South Harbour.
Gustaf Nyström’s market hall has operated since 1889. Its brick exterior and stalls retain the harbour’s connection with everyday food.
Gives historic context to city trading and cooking.
Check individual vendors’ hours. Shopping and lunch are outside the walk duration; avoid leaving food exposed beside the harbour because of gulls.
Esplanade Park

Central green promenade between downtown streets and the harbour.
Planting began in the early nineteenth century; in 1826 Engel prepared a park plan with a pedestrian axis, maples and elms.
Preserves the tradition of public promenading in the centre.
Use crossings on streets that cut through the park. Check concerts and seasonal events in the calendar; paths can be slippery in winter.
Suomenlinna Sea Fortress

Island fortress complex reached on a separate ferry outing.
Construction began in 1748 under Swedish rule. After its Russian period the fortress passed to Finland in 1918 and received its present name.
Shows changing state control and Baltic maritime defence.
Separate outing: allow return ferry travel and several hours on the islands. Follow the Blue Route and temporary signs; museums are separately ticketed. Uneven cobbles and slopes cannot be entirely avoided: with a stroller or mobility aid, ask the visitor centre about the easier route and temporary-bridge limitations. Do not go onto sea ice.
Walking routes
Senate Square and harbour
From the cathedral square follow Katariinankatu to Kauppatori, then reach the Old Market Hall and return along the waterfront to Esplanade’s eastern entrance. Stops are exterior views; church entry, shopping and lunch need extra time.

Karjalanpiirakka
Karelian open pasty with a thin rye crust and rice-porridge filling.
Egg butter is often served separately; check egg, milk and gluten.
Ruisleipä
Finnish rye bread, including dark sour varieties found in market halls and cafés.
Ingredients and additions vary; rye bread is not gluten-free.
Korvapuusti
Soft cinnamon, butter and sugar bun for a coffee break.
Check wheat, milk and egg; fresh-baking times depend on the café.
Mustikkapiirakka
Bilberry pie, often served with vanilla sauce.
The berry is not necessarily cultivated blueberry. Check milk, egg and pastry ingredients.
Practical information
Central trips normally need HSL AB; the airport needs ABC. AB singles last 80 minutes, ABC 90. An app ticket must be valid before boarding or entering the metro payment area or ferry pier. The HSL Suomenlinna ferry is included in zone tickets; private waterbuses are not. Check current I/P train changes in the journey planner.
Call 112 in danger. Coastal wind, wet stone and ice affect walking. Do not go onto sea ice around Suomenlinna; keep to marked fortress paths and away from unfenced wall edges.
Money and payments
Currency: euro, EUR. Cards are widely accepted; carry a backup card and a little cash. Cash totals are rounded to the nearest five cents, not each individual item.
Tipping
Tips are optional and not expected. You may leave a small amount for particularly good service; check the bill total before paying.

Emergency help
112: urgent police, fire or ambulance assistance, without an area code. State your location and incident and answer the operator. 116117 advises on acute medical problems; it does not replace 112 in life-threatening danger. Check call access and charges with a foreign phone plan. Sources: 112.fi and 116117.fi.
Electricity
Supply: 230 V / 50 Hz. Check your plug and appliance voltage range; preserve required earthing. A plug adapter alone does not change voltage.
Connectivity
Check your operator’s roaming and data limits. Save accommodation details and routes offline. Mobile tickets require battery power; keep the phone warm in cold weather and carry a power bank.
