Gdańsk

Merchant façades on the Motława, the harbour Crane and the story of Solidarity.

Sources verified: 3 October 2026. Check current access notices before visiting.

Open destination

Gdańsk

History and culture

Baltic trade shaped a wealthy port. War destroyed historic buildings, later reconstructed. The 1980 shipyard strikes became central to Solidarity’s emergence.

Compare maritime heritage, merchant interiors and modern-history museums. Gdańsk is distinct from neighbouring Sopot and Gdynia; shared transport does not make them one city.

Keep quiet in working churches; avoid staged entertainment photographs at places of remembrance. Cross tram tracks carefully.

Places

Gdańsk Crane

Gdańsk Crane

A medieval harbour crane and water gate on the Motława.

Its mechanism supported harbour trade; restoration completed in 2024 renewed the museum space.

It explains how the historic harbour worked, beyond its waterfront appearance.

Check official admission and stair accessibility; waterfront viewing is part of the walk, museum entry is additional.

Artus Court

Artus Court

A ceremonial merchant hall on Długi Targ.

A meeting place for merchant fraternities later became an exchange; it now belongs to the Museum of Gdańsk.

Its interior and façade reveal the status and culture of the trading elite.

Exterior stop time excludes ticketed hall visits. Check access on days of official events.

Neptune's Fountain

Neptune's Fountain

A bronze sea god in front of Artus Court.

The seventeenth-century fountain expressed the maritime character and wealth of the merchant centre.

Read the fountain together with Długi Targ façades, not as an isolated sculpture.

Stay outside the fence and basin; step aside from pedestrian traffic for photographs.

European Solidarity Centre

European Solidarity Centre

A museum and civic space beside the historic shipyard.

The exhibition traces Solidarity and political changes in Central and Eastern Europe.

Connect the museum’s story with the surrounding shipyard gates and memorials.

The permanent exhibition is ticketed; public-space access differs. Allow several additional hours for the exhibition.

Museum of the Second World War

Museum of the Second World War

A history museum with a substantial underground exhibition.

The museum explores the war through international context and civilian experience.

The subject calls for a dedicated thoughtful visit, not a brief stop between cafés.

Buy through the museum or its ticket office; free days have limits. Check audio-guide languages.

Golden Gate

Golden Gate

A ceremonial gate at the western end of Długa Street.

The early-seventeenth-century gate replaced a medieval structure and marked entry to the city’s ceremonial street.

From here the merchant centre’s axis leads towards Długi Targ.

View from the street; obey restoration barriers and do not assume the upper spaces are open.

With allergies, check shellfish, crustaceans and dairy separately.
