Edinburgh

An Old Town on volcanic rock, Georgian streets and Scottish collections.

Sources verified: 3 October 2026. Check current access notices before visiting.

Open destination

Edinburgh

History and culture

The medieval Old Town follows the ridge from the castle towards Holyrood. The eighteenth-century Georgian New Town introduced a different order of streets and squares. Their contrast underpins UNESCO recognition.

Literary memory, university life and festival stages share the city with working civic and royal buildings. During festivals, check access and accommodation ahead.

Respect queues and worshippers. Traffic drives on the left: look both ways before crossing.

Places

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle

A fortress above the city on Castle Rock.

The strategic rock was fortified before the medieval royal castle; later uses included a garrison, regalia and military commemoration.

The terrain explains the old capital’s position and the start of the Royal Mile.

Book an official timed slot. Allow for the climb, wind and access changes; a full visit takes longer than a route stop.

Royal Mile

Royal Mile

The Old Town’s historic spine with narrow closes.

The street linked fortress and royal palace; dense ridge-side development preserved courtyards and side passages.

Explore publicly accessible closes to see the old residential city’s scale.

The pin marks High Street, not the whole mile. Some closes are private and wet cobbles can be slippery.

Palace of Holyroodhouse

Palace of Holyroodhouse

A royal residence at the lower end of the Royal Mile.

The palace is associated with Mary, Queen of Scots and the Scottish court; it remains in use for official royal engagements.

The palace complements the castle’s military history with court and dynastic stories.

Check the Royal Collection Trust calendar: official events can restrict visits. Admission and interior visiting time are additional to the walk.

Calton Hill

Calton Hill

A hill of city views and classical monuments.

Nineteenth-century monuments commemorate war, science and philosophy. The Parthenon-inspired National Monument remained unfinished.

From the hill, compare the dense Old Town with the planned New Town.

Use paths in daylight and take care in wind or on wet steps. Do not climb monuments.

National Museum of Scotland

National Museum of Scotland

Scottish history, world cultures and science on Chambers Street.

The museum combines Scottish collections with the science-and-art museum tradition whose Chambers Street building opened in 1866.

A place to connect city landmarks with Scotland’s wider history.

General admission is free; special exhibitions may need tickets. Choose a section ahead and allow extra time indoors.

Scott Monument

Scott Monument

A Gothic tower of literary remembrance beside Princes Street.

The nineteenth-century memorial honours Walter Scott and his influence on the imagination of Scottish history.

A striking link between the literary Old Town and Georgian New Town.

View the exterior from public paths; check climb access and tickets with the city museums. Stair access is not step-free.
