History and culture
The historic city is associated with the trading Republic of Ragusa. Palaces, monasteries and fortifications reflect its institutions; much was rebuilt after the 1667 earthquake. The Old Town is UNESCO-listed.
Behind façades and filming locations is a living city. Museums reveal republican government, monasteries religious life and the harbour maritime trade.
Respect silence and dress rules in churches. Keep residential doors and stairs clear when photographing. Remember that people live in old quarters, especially at night.
Places
City Walls at Pile

Access to the fortifications by the Old Town’s western gate.
Walls and towers defended the maritime republic and were reinforced over centuries.
They reveal the compact city’s boundary and its relationship with the sea.
The route stop is the Pile entrance, not a full wall circuit. The ticketed circuit is nearly 2 km, adds steps and needs separate time; bring water and keep the ticket until exit.
Lovrijenac Fort

A clifftop fort west of the city walls.
The fort guarded the western approach and access from the sea; cultural events also use it today.
Compare this detached fort with the city’s enclosed wall system.
The approach includes steps. Admission is ticketed; check current wall-ticket coverage and event closures.
Rector's Palace

The elected rector’s palace beside the Old Port.
The building combined the rector’s residence and republican administration; rebuilding left Gothic and Renaissance forms.
It connects palace architecture with the city-state’s institutions.
Add museum admission and interior time separately; the façade and entrance area are not the full collection.
Franciscan Monastery

A monastery complex at Stradun’s western end.
The complex inside the walls began in the fourteenth century. The church was rebuilt after the earthquake while the cloister retained medieval forms.
It reveals monastic culture within the dense urban fabric.
Check museum and cloister admission and hours; remain quiet in active religious spaces.
Sponza Palace

An arcaded palace housing the state archive beside Luža Square.
The sixteenth-century palace combines Gothic and Renaissance forms and reflects the republic’s commercial administration.
Compare the public arcade with the archive’s role in preserving civic memory.
Exhibition access differs from exterior viewing. Check archive admission separately; do not assume it is included in a city pass.
Stradun

The principal pedestrian street between western and eastern squares.
The civic axis connected parts of the historic settlement; the unified façades reflect post-earthquake rebuilding.
It shows how the compact city organised trade and public life.
Stone is slippery after rain. Avoid blocking the street with a group; side lanes often climb steep steps.

Food
Dubrovačka rozata
Chilled milk-and-egg custard with caramel; some versions use rose liqueur.
Ask about alcohol and nut garnish; usually served as dessert.
Šporki makaruli
Local festive pasta with meat sauce, literally “dirty macaroni”.
Check the meat and portion size; a main dish, not a light side.
Zelena menestra
A regional cabbage-and-smoked-meat stew associated with festive meals.
Cabbage does not make it vegetarian; check the meat ingredients.
Arancini — candied orange peel
Sweet strips of orange peel, not Sicilian rice balls.
Try a small portion with coffee; specify the local meaning when ordering.
Brudet
A coastal fish stew found across Dalmatia, not exclusive to Dubrovnik.
Ask about fish species, bones and seafood; order sides according to the menu.
Practical information
The Old Town is pedestrian with many steps. Libertas buses connect Pile, Gruž and other districts; check seasonal timetables. Driver-sold and time-based tickets may have different conditions.
Call 112 in an emergency. Wet stone can be slippery; carry water and sun protection in summer. Do not light fires in natural areas and follow local warnings.
Money and payments
Currency: euro, EUR. Croatia replaced the kuna with the euro in 2023. Ask whether cards are accepted; carry some euros for small purchases.
Tipping
Tips are discretionary. Check whether service is included and whether a tip can be added to a card payment.

Emergency help
112 is the free emergency-services number. Give your location and the incident; English is supported. Source: gov.hr/en/112-uniform-european-emergency-phone-number/1184.
Electricity
Supply: 230 V / 50 Hz, plugs C/F. Earthed appliances need a compatible earthed adapter. A plug adapter does not change voltage.
Connectivity
Check roaming terms and limits with your operator. Save maps and tickets before walking; avoid automatically joining expensive satellite networks on vessels.
