History and culture
Canillo’s Romanesque churches recall the valleys long before modern ski tourism. Sant Joan de Caselles retains an eleventh–twelfth-century core; Baroque extensions largely shaped Sant Serni. Today distinct resorts share a system of separate passes and seasonal services. Incles and Tristaina retain their natural character: a resort name does not make every trail an equipped piste.
Combine church exteriors with a valley walk rather than trying to cross the whole region on foot in a day. Food traditions are shared with the capital and Catalan Pyrenees: escudella, trinxat and trout appear at different venues, but availability and recipes vary. In winter choose pistes for your ability and current rules; in summer choose a trail for the conditions. Our three walks are not ski routes.
Give way on narrow trails and do not enter pasture or private land without permission. Do not feed grazing animals or approach them for a portrait. Follow signs and closures; ski and bike runs are not always open to walkers. Respect church services. Stay on paths beside the lakes and take litter away.
Places
Sant Serni in Canillo

A historic church in old Canillo; the pin is on the exterior street east of the building.
Surviving fragments show Romanesque origins. Seventeenth–eighteenth-century Baroque extensions determined much of the present appearance, including the tower.
Begin with the historic settlement to see valley life beyond the resort region.
This is an exterior visit, not a promise of an open interior. Respect services and watch traffic on the residential street. The other resort valleys require a separate transfer.
Sant Joan de Caselles

A Romanesque church by the road towards France; the pin is on a separate footway beside it.
The nave and bell tower date to the late eleventh–early twelfth century; the porches were added later. Cèsar Martinell restored the apse roof, tower and porch in 1934–1935.
Compare its slender tower and small church with Sant Serni’s later volumes.
Do not approach along the CG-2 carriageway: use the pavement, marked crossing and separate footway. The exterior walk does not include the interior, altarpiece or approval to photograph inside.
Lower Incles Valley

The start of our Camí de l’Obac d’Incles section on the natural trail, not the vehicle road.
The valley combines natural habitats with pasture and traditional rural life. National tourism describes interpretation panels about earlier local occupations along the walking trail.
Observe the river valley and the relationship between open meadows and wooded slopes.
First reach the signed trail start. Check seasonal road transfers, summer operation and trail conditions separately. Do not enter private bordes or start a winter hike from this summer card.
Upper Valley by Baladosa

The end of the valley walk by Pont de la Baladosa; an open approach without crossing the private bridge.
Mountain routes branch from the upper valley. Juclar, Siscaró and the passes are separate, more demanding hikes, not an automatic continuation of our short stop.
Finish your valley visit beside the river and observe the transition from pasture to high-mountain terrain.
Vehicles and seasonal shuttles may use the approach: stay on the open route. Do not shortcut across the neighbouring private bridge. Lakes and refuges require separate time, equipment and condition checks. The photograph shows the Incles river in this valley, about 660 m downstream of the endpoint, not the bridge itself.
La Coma del Forat — Trail Start

A walking start by Ordino Arcalís’s high-mountain basin; road access and the lift are excluded from the walk.
The resort uses the natural basin as a starting point for the Tristaina lakes. Summer hiking and winter pistes are different uses of the area.
Assess the terrain before ascending and find the correct trail sign rather than following a random ski run.
Summer vehicle access may be restricted. The 2026 calendar lists Tristaina gondola operation on weekends and specified holidays from 14 September to 1 November, not daily. Check weather, actual operation and the last descent; lift tickets are separate. The photograph shows the basin from above, not the view directly from the trail-start pin.
Estany Primer, Tristaina

The first and smallest of the three Tristaina lakes; the pin is on the outside trail by the southern shore, not in the water.
The three lakes lie in a high-mountain setting. The national sheet places Primer at about 2,250 m; the complete three-lake circuit is a separate 4.39 km itinerary.
Observe the small lake and rocky slopes without stepping onto fragile shoreline vegetation.
The rocky trail has exposed sections; we promise neither an easy approach for every child nor step-free access. Our walk ends at Primer, without the other two lakes, summit or solar viewing structure. Stop for ice, snow, fog or closures.
Walking routes
Two Canillo Churches
From the exterior street by Sant Serni use old Canillo’s open streets, public squares, pavements and marked crossings to Sant Joan de Caselles. The roughly 1551 m checked chain includes residential streets and parking access lanes: watch vehicles and stop for closures. Use only CG-2’s pavement, not its carriageway. Allow 1800 m and 110 minutes with two exterior stops; church interiors are separate. The return journey is additional; not certified as a step-free route.

Along the Incles Nature Trail
From our lower Camí de l’Obac d’Incles pin follow the signed valley trail to the open Baladosa approach. Use the public branch near the end, not the neighbouring private bridge. The chain is about 2502 m; allow 2800 m and 120 minutes with two stops. This is not a Juclar or Siscaró hike. Travel from the bus stop, seasonal shuttles and the return journey are additional. Stop for snow, ice, bad weather or closures. A road return is not included; you can retrace the trail. Not a step-free walk.

La Coma and the First Lake
From the signed Camí dels Estanys de Tristaina start by La Coma follow the mountain trail and signs to Primer. The checked chain is about 1236 m with rocky and exposed sections; OSM marks a precipice on a short segment. Keep away from edges, do not shortcut, and stop for ice, snow, fog or closures. Allow 1500 m and 110 minutes including stops, without the full 4.39 km circuit, summit or solar viewing structure. Lift access, transfers and the return journey are additional. Plan around the last descent. Not a step-free or universally family-suitable route.

Food
Escudella
A hearty meat, vegetable and pulse stew, with rice or pasta depending on the recipe. In Andorra it is also associated with winter communal meals.
Pork, beef, poultry, celery and wheat are possible. Ask about stock and ingredients: plenty of vegetables does not make it vegetarian.
Trinxat
Mashed potato and cabbage are fried, often with garlic and crisp pork. The dish belongs to shared Pyrenean and Catalan traditions.
Check pork fat, bacon and additions; regional recipes can also include herring. The name guarantees neither vegetarian preparation nor a pork-free fish version.
Andorran-style Trout
The published local recipe prepares trout with ham and fries it. This combines fish and meat rather than promising today’s catch from a nearby river.
Ask about fish, ham, frying fat and flour coating. Check for bones; the name does not mean pork-free or gluten-free.
Coca Massegada
A sweet bake from the local home-cooking tradition; the national tourism portal’s recipe uses flour, egg and anise flavouring.
Ask about wheat, eggs and milk. Recipes may include aguardiente; we do not promise complete alcohol removal during baking. Check size and serving with the baker.
Spinach with Raisins and Pine Nuts
A Catalan influence in Andorran cooking: spinach combines with raisins and pine nuts for a sweet-savoury contrast.
Pine nuts are a key ingredient, not an incidental garnish. Bacon or ham are possible; bread may be served separately. Ask about allergens and do not assume every version is vegetarian.
Practical information
This is a region, not one walkable resort: Canillo, Incles and Ordino Arcalís require road transfers. L3/L4 link the capital with the Soldeu / Pas de la Casa direction, and L6 with Ordino; this does not promise a direct service to every trail. Check the final stop, seasonal shuttle, last bus and current road restrictions. Summer access to La Coma may require the gondola from L’Hortell: consult the operator’s calendar. Travel to and between our three walks is excluded from their distances and times.
For trails above 1,700 m, national tourism recommends late June–late September; outside that window separately check snow, weather and local advice. An operating lift does not prove a trail safe. Tristaina has rocky and exposed sections: we do not label it a family or step-free walk for everyone. Do not use a summer description as a winter route on snow or ice. Check forecasts and avalanche bulletins with their issue dates; no fresh assessment does not mean zero risk. Carry suitable equipment, water and connectivity, and plan return time. Grandvalira and Pal Arinsal’s announced 2026–2027 winter dates are 4 December–4 April, subject to weather and snow.
Euros and Payment
The currency is the euro, EUR. A ski pass, summer lift ticket, equipment rental and lesson are different products. Andorra Pass covers Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís; Nord Pass mainly covers the northern resorts and has separate Grandvalira access conditions. Check season, age, coverage, insurance and cancellation before paying. A resident price is not the price for every visitor.
Bills and Tips
Check the menu, extras and final bill. Tip at your discretion; we do not state a compulsory universal percentage. Ask whether you can add a tip by card. During resort peak seasons, check table availability and the dish you want beforehand. A regional name guarantees neither a uniform recipe nor allergen-free food.
Transfers and Seasonal Lifts
This is a region, not one walkable resort: Canillo, Incles and Ordino Arcalís require road transfers. L3/L4 link the capital with the Soldeu / Pas de la Casa direction, and L6 with Ordino; this does not promise a direct service to every trail. Check the final stop, seasonal shuttle, last bus and current road restrictions. Summer access to La Coma may require the gondola from L’Hortell: consult the operator’s calendar. Travel to and between our three walks is excluded from their distances and times.
Emergency Help
112 is the general emergency number; 110 police, 116 medical help and 118 fire. Dial short numbers without +376. Give your location or coordinates, incident type, number of people and their condition. Do not rely on automatic location transmission. Save mountain routes and contacts in advance: an offline map does not replace connectivity or rescue preparation.
C and F Sockets
The supply is 230 V / 50 Hz, with C and F sockets. Check appliance voltage and the correct adapter; an adapter does not convert voltage. Do not bypass earthing or use a loose connection. Plug type and rated power matter more than resemblance to a socket at home.
Roaming in Andorra
Andorra is not automatically included in EU/EEA roam-like-at-home: check your plan’s country coverage and spending cap. Andorra Telecom offers a tourist eSIM for compatible devices; check its terms, activation and validity before buying. We do not promise coverage on every mountain trail. Download the pack before travelling and monitor network selection near the French and Spanish borders.
